And the winner is...:
Once again, no Oscars on Dutch television this year so I had to watch a tiny report on the morning news. One of the
big surprises of The 78th Acadamy Awards was Crash beating Brokeback Mountain in winning the Oscar for best motion picture!
Peter Jackson's King Kong grabbed the award for visual effects, sound editing and sound mixing. Here's a rundown of
the other winners:
Category: Actor in a leading role
Nominees: Philip Seymour Hoffman (Capote), Terrence Howard (Hustle & Flow), Heath Ledger (Brokeback Mountain), Joaquin Phoenix (Walk the Line), David Strathairn (Good Night, and Good Luck)
The Winner: Philip Seymour Hoffman. Fantastic, though I would also love to see David Strathairn win the award for his excellent performance in Good Night, and Good Luck.
Category: Actor in a supporting role
Nominees: George Clooney (Syriana), Matt Dillon (Crash), Paul Giamatti (Cinderella Man), Jake Gyllenhaal (Brokeback Mountain), William Hurt (A History of Violence)
The Winner: George Clooney. I thought his role was a bit too small to win the award. I'd prefered Matt Dillon or Jake Gyllenhaal.
Category: Actress in a leading role
Nominees: Judi Dench, (Mrs. Henderson Presents), Felicity Huffman, (Transamerica), Keira Knightley, (Pride & Prejudice), Charlize Theron, (North Country), Reese Witherspoon (Walk the Line)
The Winner: Reese Witherspoon. Finally, the Sweet Home Alabama star did it! I just love Reese, great job!
Category: Actress in a supporting role
Nominees: Amy Adams, (Junebug), Catherine Keener, (Capote), Frances McDormand, (North Country), Rachel Weisz, (The Constant Gardener), Michelle Williams (Brokeback Mountain)
The Winner: Rachel Weisz. I still haven't seen The Constant Gardener...
Category: Cinematography
Nominees: Wally Pfister (Batman Begins), Rodrigo Prieto (Brokeback Mountain), Robert Elswit (Good Night, and Good Luck), Dion Beebe (Memoirs of a Geisha), Emmanuel Lubezki (The New World)
The Winner: Memoirs of a Geisha. Too bad Wally Pfister didn't win. Also loved the black and white work of Robert Elswit for Good Night, and Good Luck.
Category: Directing
Nominees: Ang Lee (Brokeback Mountain), Bennett Miller (Capote), Paul Haggis (Crash), George Clooney (Good Night, and Good Luck), Steven Spielberg (Munich)
The Winner: Ang Lee. This was a tough choice, I couldn't choose between Paul Haggis, George Clooney and Ang lee.
Category: Best picture
Nominees: Brokeback Mountain, Capote, Crash, Good Night, and Good Luck, Munich
The Winner: Crash. Yeah, Crash definitely deserved to win this Best Picture award!

Barbara Broccoli talks Casino Royale!:
Daniel Craig is not the right Bond, can't drive a car, fights like a girl and gets his teeth punched out...
Negative press surrounds Casino Royale, which is in now in production for just a few weeks. Finally producer Barbara Broccoli reacts.
"His teeth are fine, his driving is fine, he doesn't have heat rash and he's not afraid of the water," producer Barbara Broccoli said about the negative rumors, "We're aware of it, but it doesn't mean anything to us. There's always a heightened interest in Bond, and every time we recast the role there's even more. It's just in keeping with what we've been experiencing."

less than expected. Here's the rest of the Top Ten:

Milla Jovovich talks Resident Evil: Extinction:
Milla Jovovich, star of the upcoming Ultraviolet, talked about her next project, Resident Evil: Extinction:
"Well, definitely, Alice has changed a bit, and so we can expect some crazy new stuff. The script is awesome, and it's going to be really good. I don't want to say too much, because I really haven't talked to them about what I can and can't say. I would tell you the whole story, but I'm not sure I can."
To be honest, I've lost interest after the first Resident Evil film... Paul W.S. Anderson is expected to write and direct the third chapter.
