E.T. is back and this time he's bringing is friends! Steven Spielberg adapts H.G. Wells classic War of the Worlds. Tom Cruise re-teams with the filmmaker after delivering the sci-fi thriller Minority Report. The rest of the cast includes Dakota Fanning, Justin Chatwin, Tim Burton and Miranda Otto.
The story in a nutshell:
Ray Ferrier (Tom Cruise) is a divorced dockworker and less-than-perfect father. His life changes when a mysterious thunderstorm terrorizes the city. Lighting strikes and several minutes later, giant Tripods are crawling out of the ground. Our worst fear has become reality. They're here, Aliens with one goal, to destroy life on earth and Ray is doing his best to protect his two kids Rachel (Fanning) and Robbie (Chatwin).
I was wondering if Spielberg could pull it off, because he made this epic film in an extremely short amount of time. Pre-production started during the Fall in 2004, filmed a few months later, doing the visual effects and editing at the same, delivered the movie in June 2005. That's incredible! This doesn't mean Spielberg rushed through the entire process. He just worked efficiently and made some radical scheduling changes.
Spielberg makes his 'Independence Day' combined with a touch of 'Signs'. The events are being followed via a few characters so the fear and chaos have a much bigger impact. Tom Cruise is at his best as the hard dockworker but failing father who gets a chance to set things right. Tim Robbins is stunning in a small role as Ogilvy, a desperate man who plans to attack the aliens, even if it'll cost Ray's and Rachel's life.
The disaster-flick fanatics will also have a jolly good time with the impressive special effects that creates the total destruction of the planet. The attack of the Tripods shooting laserbeams, which pulverize civilians and buildings, is jaw-dropping.
But the highlights of the movie aren't the special effects but it's the emotional smaller character-driven scenes. Steven Spielberg's War of the Worlds is a scary, intense, epic yet small sci-fi thriller.
