Jason Statham is back as Frank Martin, known as The Transporter! The eccentric driver accepted an unusual mission this time, his special cargo is a little boy named Jack. Frank drives the kid to school and picks him up again. The boy's father is a powerful USA official. Frank becomes an important weapon when Jack is being kidnapped by the bad guy Gianni (Alessandro Gassman) and his uber-bad girlfriend Lola (Kate Nauta). The Transporter is on a rampage through sunny Miami to find the kid and bring him back to his parents.
The first flick was quite successful, especially during its release on DVD. Producer-writer Luc Besson once again hired Louis Leterrier (Jet Li's Unleashed) to direct the sequel. Corey Yuen is also back as the fight choreographer. Transporter 2 is the standard French Hong Kong action film with a touch of Hollywood, created at the Luc Besson factory. The story is unimportant, the characters are over-the-top and the explosive action ignores the physical laws of gravity.
Jason Statham finally stars in a leading role instead of being cast in small supporting roles. He proves with his Frank Martin character that he definitely can make a movie without a story a lot more interesting. The action sequences are absolutely unreal but Yuen and Leterrier deliver such a visual spectacle that grabs your attention all the way through the film. Transporter 2 revolves around a ridiculous plot, which I have forgotten already, but the film is a good example of 'guilty pleasure', a down and dirty over-the-top action vehicle with slick visuals.
