The Nativity Story is the ultimate Christmas story, the tale of a miraculous pregnancy, Mary's and Joseph's journey to Bethlehem and the birth of Jesus. Catherine Hardwicke (Thirteen) directs, the cast includes Shohreh Aghdashloo as Elizabeth, Ciarán Hinds as King Herod, Oscar Isaac as Joseph and starring as Mary, Keisha Castle-Hughes who received an Oscar-nod for her extraordinary performance in one of my all-time favorites, Whale Rider.
The Nativity Story tries to tell the well-known story of Mary and Joseph in a realistic manner, giving an in-depth look at the characters. The movie centers on the special relationship between Mary and Joseph, Mary's pregnancy, their position within the community and the difficult choices they have to make to prepare them for the birth of Jesus.
The film looks wonderful with its beautiful settings and costume design but unfortunately, Catherine Hardwicke doesn't go the extra mile to bring more than just that story that everybody knows. She doesn't fully use the difficult challenges and obstacles that Mary and Joseph experiences. It all results in a weak film that feels like you're watching a Discovery Channel documentary. The Nativity Story's visuals are nice but the film doesn't have that epic touch and simply becomes a very mediocre Christmas movie in the end.
