The Break-Up isn't a romantic comedy because the movie centers on the hard results of a relationship that reached its end. In the movie's case, we're talking about the break-up of Gary (Vince Vaughn) and Brooke (Jennifer Aniston). Brooke can't take it anymore, the selfish attitude of Gary becomes too much for her. Tension reaches its climax and a huge fight follows. Who dares to take the next step to make up again? Gary and Brooke are searching for a solution but the situation is getting even worse.
Vince Vaughn was excellent in the hilarious Dodgeball, Old School and Wedding Crashers. The Break-Up has got the same kind of comedy with blabbermouth Vaughn at the top of his game. But Vaughn, just like Aniston, also presents a more serious side. The big, intense fight between Gary and Brooke is an excellent example of the actors' great performance.
The Break-Up also has a great cast who portrays the weirdest characters. The cast includes the always-funny Jon Favreau as Gary's buddy who's not afraid to use extreme violence to solve problems. Justin Long, also in Dodgeball, is great as Brooke's over-the-top gay colleague. Vincent D'Onofrio has got a small but nice role as Gary's socially challenged older brother.
Director Peyton Reed doesn't deliver a sweet romantic comedy with The Break-Up, but surprises by mixing emotional moments with gritty humor.
