The Aviator is Martin Scorsese's second collaboration with Leonardo DiCaprio. They also worked together on Gangs of New York and we'll see more of them when they'll start filming The Departed, a remake of the Hong Kong thriller Infernal Affairs. The all-star cast of The Aviator includes Cate Blanchet, Kate Beckinsale, John C. Reilly, Alec Baldwin, Alan Alda, Jude Law and many more.
The story in a nutshell:
The movie revolves around the eccentric multimillionaire, director and aviator Howard Hughes (Leonardo DiCaprio). The Aviator begins with Hughes' insane attempt to film his first movie Hell's Angels. Hughes' other passion was aviation. He owned several companies, including TWA airlines and developed groundbreaking new airplanes.
The Aviator opens big with Scorseses' unique overwhelming style. He re-creates the tone of the 40's not just only with costumes and great sets but also with a fantastic almost washed-out color palette. Look closely, cause he doesn't use the color green in the first part of the movie. Scorsese holds on to the fast pace and keeps the movie breathtaking for the complete 170 minutes.
Cate Blanchet is fantastic as Hugh's wife Katherine Hepburn. Kate Beckinsale does a subtle and great job as the beautiful Ava Gardner. There're also nice small roles of John C. Reilly as Noah Dietrich, Alan Alda as Senator Brewster and Alec Baldwin as Hughes' competitor Juan Trippe.
Leonardo DiCaprio is, despite his babyface, very impressive as the eccentric Hughes who slowly gets sucked into his craziness. DiCaprio is excellent and absolutely deserves the Oscar nomination for best actor.
Martin Scorcese gives an intense look into the life of the legendary pioneer and America's history of aviation.
