Kurt Russell re-teams with Disney, celebrating his 40th anniversary with the studio where he began his career as a child star. Sky High follows the same successful path of the superhero flicks but creates its own characters instead of basing it on the popular Marvel heroes. Kurt Russell plays the invincible Commander who fights crime with the help of his wife Jetstream (Kelly Preston). Their teen son Will (Michael Angarano) enters a special high school for superheroes' kids. The kids learn how to develop and use their special powers. Tough job for Will because he's the son of the legendary Commander and Jetstream, a son who still doesn't know what his super powers are.
Sky High is a perfect combination of superhero flicks and teen comedies. The movie doesn't take itself seriously, like most superhero movies do. The students of the special high school encounters the same problems as normal teenagers... but most of the cases involve superpowers, think of bullies with super speed! Of course, Sky High wouldn't be a high school without the social groups, like the cool kids and nerds. Got cool powers, you're popular, If your powers aren't special, you will be the support hero, a.k.a. the sidekick!
Kurt Russell seems to have quite some fun and delivers a great performance as The Commander. Bruce "Evil Dead' Campbell rocks as coach Boomer and David Foley is hilarious as The Commander's former sidekick. And for the fans, TV's Wonder Woman, Lynda Carter, is Principal Powers. Oh yeah, Lynda Carter still looks hot.
Sky High offers more than comedy, it also has plenty of great action, just like the other superhero flicks. The movie scores with impressive sets and excellent visual effects. Director Mike Mitchell keeps it light and fun and delivers a very entertaining superhero movie in the tradition of Disney.
