My loyal website visitors know that I'm not only running this little movie website, but I'm also working as an illustrator and concept designer. I just love to draw since I was a little kid and Frank Miller's comics were a big influence when tried to find my own drawing style. I've learned so much from his Daredevil, Batman and Elektra comics. His drawings are rough, straight to the point yet very realistic. Miller's The Dark Knight Returns series is one of my all time favorite comics. These comics, created in the 80's, was his take on a new, dark and gritty Batman. Director Tim Burton used this dark style for his first Batman film. Miller kept on raising the bar when he created the film-noir comic about a dirty corrupt town called Sin City.
Robert Rodriguez, a big fan of Sin City, decided to adapt the comics. Frank Miller wasn't waiting for a Sin City movie at first but Rodriguez managed to persuade him when he showed a test sequence. Rodriguez wanted to stay true to the comics. He used the same text from the comics and handled the panels as blueprint for setting up the scenes. Rodriguez went even further and wanted Miller as co-director. Rodriguez had to leave the Director's Guild so Miller could get his credit as director. No problem, "sometimes you have to break the rules to do something different!"

Sin City the Comic!
Sin City the Movie!

Three Sin City books were used for the film's script: The Hard Goodbye, The Big Fat Kill and That Yellow Bastard. Three tales about corruption, violence, survival and a small group of people who fight for justice in their special kind of way.
The most important roles are being portrayed by Mickey Rourke as the bruiser Marv, who uses his fists as an instrument to communicate. Bruce Willis as Hartigan, the retired cop who tries to save a young girl. And Clive Owen as Dwight who gets in trouble with a dangerous cop.
Smaller but also fantastic roles are being played by Jessica Alba as Nancy, Nick Stahl as Roark Jr., Elijah Wood as Kevin, Rosaria Dawson as Gail, Benicio Del Toro as Jackie Boy, Brittany Murphy as Shellie, Michael Clarke Duncan as Manute and also Powers Boothe and fellow Dutchman Rutger Hauer. Yep, an incredible cast with an eerie resemblance to the comic's characters.
Interesting note; the sequence of Dwight (Clive Owen) talking to Jackie Boy (Benicio Del Toro) in the car, is directed by Quentin Tarantino!
Robert Rodriguez uses the comics' dialogs and plotlines but the stories have been slightly shortened, especially The Big Fat Kill's, because of the film's running time. The action packed The Hard Goodbye chapter with and impressive Mickey Rourke as Marv is my favorite part of the Sin City movie.
The film is also visually stunning. The movie is black and white but Rodriguez smartly uses a few colors to enhance the story. The backgrounds are CGI so it perfectly matches Frank Miller's abstract vision of the city.
Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller deliver the ultimate adaptation of a comic and fortunately, the comics offer enough material for more films, so bring on Sin City 2!
