Director Alexander Payne brings another comedy, which revolves around a loser, just like his previous film About Schmidt. A man who doesn't seem to fit in the real world and feels more comfortable in his own depression. Jack Nicholson played the lead in About Schmidt, the great Paul Giamtti got the chance to star in Sideways.
The story in a nutshell:
Miles (Giamatti) and Jack (Thomas Haden Church) plan a holiday week right before Jack gets married. Miles wants to introduce Jack to the wonderful vineyards of California. Jack just wants to get laid before the wedding. Jack's little plan seems to work but it also has an impact on his friendship with Miles. Miles gets sucked into his own depression, even when he meets the beautiful Maya (Virginia Madsen).
Sideways is a wonderful little film with an outstanding cast. Paul Giamatti is impressive as Miles. Church offers a nice balance as his buddy Jack. The charming Virginia Madsen finally gets to shine again in a well-written part that got her nominated for an Acadamy Award.
Director Alexander Payne delivered a fantastic film, with a nice 70's look and a wonderful story that mostly revolves around … wine! This subject plays a big part of the movie and pops up in most of the greatly written dialogs. Sideways is a hilarious comedy, heartwarming film and touching drama.
