Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl was the big surprise hit of summer 2003. The entertaining old school adventure flick, based on Disneyland's ride, was a huge success thanks to the unique performance of Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow. The actor was more than ready to pick up the sword again for the sequel Dead Man's Chest, which will be followed by another one in 2007.
Gore Verbinski is back to direct and Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley also co-star. The villain of the new adventure is the creepy Davy Jones, played by Bill Nighy.
The story in a nutshell:
Captain Jack Sparrow owes a blood debt to the legendary Captain Davy Jones. Sparrow tries hard not being caught by Davy and his crew. And to make things worse, Sparrow also wrecks the wedding plans of Will and Elizabeth.
Dead Man's Chest is a huge spectacular ride, which centers on Johnny Depp who's created an already legendary character. He takes it up a notch in the sequel, making Captain Jack Sparrow even more funny and eccentric. The unrecognizable Bill Nighy as the new villain Davy Jones also does a great job, just like Geoffrey Rush did in the first flick.
The sequel contains lots of old school and CGI effects. Especially the make-up effects of Jones and his sea monster crew are very impressive. But unfortunately the film also has its flaws. Dead Man's Chest is, with just a few hilarious scenes, less funny and original as its predecessor. The movie's running time is also a bit too long, becoming a bit of a drag that gives you a spectacle-overload. And, as you already know, the third part will be released next year, which makes this film, yup, think of Back to the Future 2 or Matrix Reloaded.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest doesn't top the original but it does deliver a good ol' entertaining adventure film.
