My first encounter with Jackie Chan was Police Story, back in 1985. Police Story was a groundbreaking hard-boiled cop thriller with incredible stunts. Jackie got his international breakthrough years later with Rush Hour and after that, his Hollywood produced films did poor business at the Box Office but also became less Jackie. Jackie felt limited by the rules of Hollywood. So it was time to go back to his Hong Kong roots, time for a new Police Story!
The story in a nutshell:
Inspector Eddie Chan's important mission to catch a murderous gang, fails miserably. Chan's team falls into a trap and is being killed one by one. Eddie gets suspended and tries to drink away his feeling of guilt at his local bar until a rookie cop contacts Chan. The cop needs his help to find the gang who murdered Chan's agents.
New Police Story is Jackie Chan's comeback film. He proves that he's at his best without the influence of Hollywood. The film is loaded with spectacular stunts and gritty Hong Kong-style fight scenes, just like the ol' Chan films. We also get to see Jackie in a very serious role. Last time I saw him in a non-comedic role was in 93's Crime Story.
New Police Story is dark, gritty and contains a very gruesome slaughter scene, which makes New Police Story one of Jackie's toughest films ever. Jackie Chan proves that he's still the master of Hong Kong action movies and is still capable of doing his own fights and exiting stunts. New Police Story is old school Jackie at his best!
