Yes, finally, an old-fashioned adventure flick! Unfortunately no Harrison Ford but we get to see Nicolas Gage instead! Jon Turteltaub, who also directed the dramas Phenomenon and Instinct, finds himself on new territory with National Treasure. Fortunately uber-producer Jerry Bruckheimer is there to back him up and give him tips on how to make a big budget adventure flick!
The story in a nutshell:
Benjamin Franklin Gates is determined to find the treasure that his family has been looking for, several generations long. Gates finds out that an important clue can be found on the backside of America's most important document: The Declaration of Independence. The only way to find the gold is to steal this document.
National Treasure is an adventure film… without the exotic backdrops. The film is set in America and that's what makes it interesting; the idea that an historical treasure has been hidden in America and the clues are spread out all over the history of America. Another fun part of the film is that Gates' ex-partner Ian How is also looking for the gold so the whole flick becomes a giant chase and race against time.
Nicolas Cage does a great job and delivers a fun character. The rest of the cast includes Diane Kruger, Sean Bean as Ian and smaller roles from Jon Voight and Harvey Keitel. Justin Bartha provides the comic relief as Gate's sidekick Riley.
National Treasure is a very entertaining, fun flick. Jon Turteltaub keeps the film fast paced with a few fun jokes to catch your breath. Indiana Jones, make way for Benjamin Franklin Gates!
