Pull the dusty old horror classics out of the closet and renew them with slick special effects, hot teenagers, rocking soundtrack and you've got yourself a hit. It worked for the remakes of Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Dawn of the Dead and the Amityville Horror, now it's time to upgrade House of Wax. The horror flick is loosely based on 1953's version. Directors Robert Zemeckis and Joel Silver are producing via their Dark Castle Entertainment company that also brought us Gothika and Thirteen Ghosts. Spanish director Jaume Collet-Serra makes his directorial debut with House of Wax.
The story in a nutshell:
Six horny teenagers Carly (Elisha Cuthbert), Nick (Chad Michael Murray), Paige (Paris Hilton), Wade (Jared Padelecki), Dalton (Jon Abrahams) and Blake (Robert Ri'chard) are on their way to the football championship but end up in a small town when one of the cars breaks down. They visit the main attraction of the town, Trudy's House of Wax, a big house with life-like wax sculptures. The teens don't know that the only inhabitants of the town are two brothers, Bo and Vincent, who are looking forward to add some new sculptures to the museum.
House of Wax is your average remake of a horror film made for a certain target audience who shares the same interests as the movie's characters. The horror flick is loaded with clichés; curious teenagers looking for trouble, pumping soundtrack, lots of beer, not one but two serial killers, and a sexy hot blonde running around in lingerie. Does this make it a bad film? Depends on how you look at it. Through the eyes of a filmcritic, the movie offers simply nothing, besides a wonderfully written, deep and symbolic slaughter scene of Paris Hilton. The horror fans, on the other hand, will find more joy in the House if Wax. The film suffers from a slow start but gets interesting once the first body is plunged in hot wax. House if Wax delivers plenty of gore for the genre fans and the cool climax is a nice highlight of the overall flawed horror flick.
