The "versus" concept is something that is used often in the comic book industry. What if Alien meets Predator or Terminator beats the hell out of Batman, I even got a great comic where Superman is fighting Muhammad Ali. Making a "versus" movie is something I've only seen in Godzilla movies but the future looks promising, my friends, 'cause Batman vs. Superman is in development and Alien vs. Predator is in pre-production. First up is A Nightmare on Elmstreet vs. Friday the 13th which will kick off the "versus" franchise, the horror flick where Freddy Krueger meets Jason Voorhees. The story in a nutshell: Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees, once feared serial killers, now forgotten until Freddy finds a way to come back using the inner demons of Jason. The resurrection of Jason ignites the fear in people (especially teenagers) on Elmstreet that Freddy needs to gain power in order return. The only problem is that Jason starts killing everybody before Freddy gets the chance to try out his bloody gloves with blades. Hell is raised on earth when the two killers are turning against each other. Fortunately Freddy vs. Jason isn't only a studio's way to earn a lot of bucks. The project was handled with care and a lot time was spent to get the story right. The writers Damian Shannon and Mark Swift came up with a fantastic idea how to resurrect Freddy and Jason. The movie opens brilliantly with an introduction by Freddy Krueger, using old material from the previous Nigthmare movies. Freddy figures out how to return with the help of the nightmares of Jason Voorhees. The movie builds up until that moment where everybody is waiting for, the moment where the horror icons just beats the crap out of each other (and killing some innocent teenagers along the way). Singer Kelly Rowland is making her film debut and proves she can run and scream at the same time. Jason Ritter and Monica Keena are doing a fine job playing brother and sister discovering that they're connected to the Elmstreet tragedy years ago. But of course all the attention goes to the main characters Ken Kirzinger as Jason and the great Robert Englund as Freddy. You just know Robert is back and having fun putting on the brown hat, gloves and dirty sweater again. He is the ultimate serial killer with deadly one-liners. Hong Kong director Ronny Yu who made HK classic Bride with White Hair and his first Hollywood movie Bride of Chucky, turns Freddy vs. Jason into an old school slaughter fest. I was very pleased we didn't get to see Freddy doin' some wire-fu and Jason demonstrating some nice tai chi positions. We get to see some fresh, spectacular and extremely bloody fight sequences instead, just the way two horror icons should fight each other. Ronny Yu made the movie for the Freddy and Jason fans, giving them exactly what they want to see... and more. Beware folks, Freddy and Jason are back, try not to sleep...
