Reggy's Film Top Ten 2006:
It's been a cool movie year for me. I haven't seen a lot of indie flicks or foreign films though, but I'm pretty pleased with the mainstream flicks that hit the cinemas this year. So this time, I've picked my favorite movies based on its entertainment level, because that's why we go to the theater, right? I'll start with number ten and will work my way up to my favorite flick of the year, here's Reggy's Film Top Ten 2006:

Reggy's Film Top Ten 2006

10. Miami Vice
Miami Vice didn't get great reviews, most of you would probably be surprised that I've picked this movie. I was surprised too, I was pleasantly surprised, cause this film is totally different than the TV series. Director Michael Mann demonstrates how to make a good adaptation of a TV series. No spoof or an exact copy with a bigger budget. His Miami Vice is an impressive, realistic and gritty look at cops going undercover.

9. V For Vendetta
Also a very big surprise. This film doesn't rely on the special effects but delivers a character driven political thriller. Natalie Portman is fantastic, Hugo Weaving's performance as a character who's face is hidden behind a mask is amazing. Love the visuals.

8. Babel
An amazing experience. A film that tells several different stories that in one way or the other are connected. The segment in Japan simply blew me away. Great performances, great directing by Alejandro González Iñárritu.

7. Children of Men
A sci fi flick like you've never seen before! The visuals and cinematography are stunning. The action sequences, which seem to be shot with one take without cutting are jaw-dropping.

6. Lord of War
Nicolas Cage at his best. A bizarre and very original film about a weapons dealer. This film has it all; action, drama, comedy, political conspiracies and slick visuals.

5. Mission Impossible III
Tommy Boy is back! I didn't see this one coming. I entered the movie theater with mixed feelings but left my seat with a nice adrenaline rush. Finally a movie that gets your heart pumping without giving you a moment to catch breath. Tight direction by J.J. Abrams, Cruise once again proves that he's the biggest movie star around and Philip Seymour Hoffman as the bad guy, what more do ya want! A very, very entertaining flick.

4. Fearless
One of Jet Li's best movies! A great martial arts epic about the founder of Wushu. Incredible story, breathtaking sets and lots and lots of foot- and punchwork of the martial arts expert. Fearless is Croughing Tiger, Hidden Dragon on acid.

3. Rocky Balboa
I can't help it, once I hear the first tunes of Bill Conti's score, I'm sold! Sylvester Stallone goes against all odds and delivers one more Rocky flick. This time, he goes back to the tone of the first film and focusses on the drama, not the slick training sessions and boxing match. Stallone is a great actor and director, I really hope that this film also marks his comeback, an underdog's comeback.

2. The Departed
Martin Scorsese, Irish mafia, Jack Nicholson. The magic ingredients for a powerful thriller about the cops versus a mob boss. Absolutely liked the original Hong Kong version Infernal Affairs, but really love Scorsese's remake. DiCaprio and Damon are great, but the excellent supporting roles of Mark Wahlberg, Alec Baldwin and Martin Sheen also deserve to be mentioned. Goodfellas,Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Casino and now The Departed... Scorsese ads another classic to his list

1. Superman Returns
Without a doubt, my favorite movie of the year is Superman Returns! I've been a fan since childhood. Even went to the States to see the film, and I think I've seen it seven times. This movie, man, It moves me, brings me back to the time that I was a little kid who saw his favorite hero on the big screen for the first time. Bryan Singer made this movie with love and respect to Dick Donner's Superman and Christopher Reeve, he even brings the Superman Mythology to a new level. A very emotional story, love Brandon Routh as the new Superman, a great villain played by Kevin Spacey and groundbreaking visual effects. A wonderful epic movie, Superman finally returns.
