Fearless tells the true story of the life of Huo Yuanjia, the Wushu master who played an important role for the people of China.
Jet Li portrays the part of the arrogant fighter Huo. The Wushu expert is always ready to prove that he's the best fighter of his town, country and even the world. But when his family becomes victim of his lifestyle, Huo's world collapses. Now Huo Yuanjia has a new difficult challenge, in which redemption and a new reason to fight are essential.
Jet Li's goes back to his roots in Fearless. The film is set around 1900 and demonstrates the traditional kung fu, which is choreographed by the legendary Yuen Woo Ping (The Matrix trilogy). Fearless is loaded with breathtaking fight sequences. The film instantly brings me back to the time when I was young and studied these old kung fu flicks on my VCR, with the poor picture and sound quality. Fearless breathes the same mood, the fights are just as beautiful yet a lot more realistic because they keep the wirework to a minimum (and better picture and sound quality of course).
Ronny Yu is known for great Hong Kong films like The Bride with White Hair and Hollywood productions like Bride of Chucky and Freddy vs. Jason. Fearless looks exactly like a traditional Chinese film but also got a nice Hollywood flavor, because of Ronny's international background. He keeps the film powerful and fast-paced but hits the breaks right on time to give Huo's character more depth. Besides the utterly cool fights, the film is also visually stunning with its wonderful sets and locations accompanied by Shigeru Umebayashi's score.
Jet Li is amazing as Huo Yuanjia, probably one of the most important roles he ever played. Fearless marks Jet Li's last martial arts epic, well, I don't think so… but if it is, then Fearless is absolutely one of Jet Li's best martial arts flicks ever.
