Horror flicks about masked serial killers slaughtering teens doesn't scare me but the films about ghosts and dark forces give me the creeps and sleepless nights... especially the ones which start with the line 'Based on a true story'.
The Exorcism of Emily Rose is one of those, a film that is based on true events of the 19-year old Emily who is possessed by a demon. The doctors think she's epileptic but the medicines aren't successful. The parents then ask Father Moore to help free the girl via exorcism. Emily dies during the process and the Father is being accused of murder. Lawyer Erin Bruner must defend Moore in court and the case gets lots of media attention. Everything leads up to the moment when Moore tells the jury about the night of the exorcism of Emily Rose.
The Exorcism of Emily Rose is a fascinating mix of courtroom drama and horror. The case forms the basis and explains the story of Emily Rose told by witnesses and flashbacks. Laura Linney plays Moore's counselor who also witnesses mysterious forces during the trial. Always love to see Laura and as always, she does a fine job. Tim Wilkinson is also great as Father Moore who did his best to save the girl. Jennifer Carpenter delivers an impressive performance with the different faces of Emily Rose.
Scott Derrickson did a solid job as director. The difficult subject is being analyzed by different points of view. The tension is being build up nicely till the terrifying climax of the exorcism. The Exorcism of Emily Rose smartly uses effective, subtle effects that intensify the horror. The Exorcism of Emily Rose is a captivating courtroom drama-horror flick that will give you the creeps... and a few sleepless nights.
