Edison tells the story of a corrupt police force. Reporter Pollack (Justin Timberlake) and his boss Ashford (Morgen Freeman) gathered hard evidence that proofs that special unit FRAT is dirty. Dangerous FRAT agents Deed (LL Cool J) and Lazerov (Dylan McDermott) are determined to stop Pollack from publishing his article about the police force.
The flick has got an impressive cast; Morgan Freeman, LL Cool J, Dylan McDermott and Justin Timberlake. But there's more, John Heard, Cary Elwes and even Kevin Spacey play important roles in the cop thriller. An incredible cast, which could be a director's wet dream. Director David J. Burke got the opportunity… but fails to deliver on many levels.
I don't have any comments about the performances of the actors. Freeman and Spacey (though wearing an awful wig) are always fascinating to watch. LL Cool J and McDermott are just fine as the dirty cops. Even Justin Timberlake does a considerable job with one of his first acting gigs. What bothers me is the lousy way David J. Burke is capturing their scenes. It really shows the man's background as producer/director of TV series. The film's pacing is off beat from the start. The sloppy editing makes weird jumps to connect one end to the other. The so-so dialogs are predictable and the story is filled with stereotype characters. Then, the whole film takes another turn during its unrealistic action-packed climax, in which Deeds takes on the baddies with a flame-thrower. Does every cop have a flame-thrower in the trunk of their car?
Despite its predictable story but with these great actors, Edison could have been a very suspenseful cop thriller. Too bad David J. Burke doesn't take advantage of this opportunity.
