ATF agent Doug Carlin (Denzel Washington) investigates a bomb explosion on a New Orleans ferry. Carlin is being approached by agent Pryzwarra (Val Kilmer), who invites him to join his team. Pryzwarra's unit has invented a special technique using high-tec computers and satellite data enabling them to look back in time. The crime-scene can now be reconstructed so suspects can be observed from any given angle. The futuristic system holds more secrets and Carlin sees a new window to save lifes.
Director Tony Scott and Denzel Washington also joined forces on Crimson Tide and the dramatic thriller Man on Fire. Their latest, Déjà Vu, is a strange mixture of cop thriller and sci-fi. The film opens intense with the huge explosion, the introduction of the characters and the 'time travel' technique that includes a spectacular carchase sequence, which takes place at two different moments in time, you gotta see it to believe it! However, the whole concept of Déjà Vu is being ripped out of proportion at one point and becomes a bit too far-fetched.
Fortunately, Tony Scott's cool, slick visuals and Denzel Washington's presence keep the film entertaining. Déjà Vu is also the first film production set in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. The film cleverly incorporates the Hurricane's aftermath and is dedicated to the strength and spirit of the people of New Orleans.
