Andrew Adamson, director of the incredible Shrek films, delivers his first live-action movie with The Chronicles of Narnia; The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe. The film is based on C.S. Lewis' book, which was published in 1950. His books were also one of the inspirations for J.K. Rowling's Harry Poter series.
The cast of The Chronicles of Narnia includes Tilda Swinton as Jadis the powerful White Witch and Liam Neeson who voices the noble ruler of Narnia, Aslan the Lion. But the heart of the story is being formed by four little newcomers, Georgie Henley (Lucy), Skandar Keynes (Edmund), Anna Popplewell (Susan) and William Mosely (Peter).
The story in a nutshell:
The story is set during World War II. Lucy, Edmund, Susan and Peter are being moved to a huge country home of an old professor. They discover a magical wardrobe that leads them into the mysterious world of Narnia, a land where animals talk and mythological creatures live. The dangerous White Witch wants to take over Narnia but, according to the prophecy, the four children are the only ones who can help king Aslan the Lion to free the land.
Andrew Adamson closely observed Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings. He treats C.S. Lewis' story with respect and also tells the tale on a very realistic level so it doesn't become a cute film about talking animals and lovely unicorns. The war of Narnia is just as ugly as World War II that takes place at the same time. The war also forces the children to join the life-threatening battle against the powerful troops of the White Witch.
Lord of the Rings' Weta Workshop did part of the overall breathtaking effects of The Chronicles of Narnia. The talking animals, including the funny beavers and the dangerous wolves, look very real. Aslan the Lion was also brought to life with jaw-dropping CGI combined with animatronics, and is absolutely the highlight of the film. His interaction with the kids is moving but also scary as hell cause the Lion looks that real. Adamson really takes off during the gritty attack of the soldiers of Aslan against the Witch's warriors. Rhinos, cheetahs, buffaloes in body armor and also the mythical creatures of the Greek mythology are all part of this giant battle.
The Chronicles of Narnia; The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe is powerful, touching and above all, magical.
