Wow, I really enjoyed the last few years, all my favorite superheroes are getting their own big feature film and none of them has disappointed me... until they began working on Catwoman. The first photos of Halle Berry in the catsuit were just hilarious. French director Pitof ignored the Catwoman origins and came up with a different approach. Well, the golden rule, don't mess with the origins or you will find out how mad the fans can become. And they did, the movie already carried a very bad buzz, which resulted in bad box office performances.
With all of the above in mind, I decided to step into the movie theatre...
The story in a nutshell:
The quiet little girl, Patience Phillips (Halle Berry), accidentally finds out about the devilish business strategy of her bosses Laurel and George Hedare (Sharon Stone and Lambert Wilson), owners of a large cosmetics company. Patience is killed and brought back to life with the help of a cat carrying mystical powers. Phillips uses her new cat-like powers to find her killer and bring down the company.
Catwoman has become your typical, predictable superhero flick with a thin and sometimes stupid story. Come on, a new cream that keeps your skin young but with nasty side effects, like turning it into a rock-hard substance? The catsuit is still ridiculous but Berry's wonderful body makes it not that hard to look at.
Does this mean that it's a bad flick? Well, it wasn't that awful as I expected. The visual aspect is breathtaking. Pitof used a wonderful color palette, which gave the movie a fantastic look. The camera movements are inventing and the action sequences are very nice, thanks to some nifty CGI effects. Halle Berry managed to breath life into the badly written character. Sharon Stone doesn't succeed, but that's because of her really badly written character. Benjamin Bratt is great as detective Tom Lone, Patience's love interest.
Pitof gave Catwoman a nice French feel to it with stunning visuals but empty from the inside and that's why this movie can't compete with the other fantastic superhero films.
