Sharon Stone is back as the sexy novelist Catherine Tramell who is once again in trouble with the law. Scotland Yard's Roy Washorn (David Thewlis) appoints psychiatrist Michael Glass (David Morrisey) to evaluate her. Glass becomes a pawn in Catherine's game of sex, manipulation, sex, seduction and sex.
Honestly, nobody is waiting for a sequel to Basic Instinct. But the producers thought differently and offered Sharon Stone a lot of bucks to show some skin again. Unfortunately, the sequel is sans Michael Douglas and director Paul Verhoeven. Michael Caton-Jones 2 (City by the Sea, Rob Roy) got the job to capture the exotic adventures of risk-addict Catherine Tramell.
I'll just keep it plain and simple. Lets start with the good. Visually interesting. Composer John Murphy wonderfully combines Jerry Goldsmith's sensual theme with his score. And of course, Sharon Stone, 48, but still looking very attractive.
The bad… the casting. David Morrisey, great actor but isn't convincing as Catherine's opponent. There's also no erotic chemistry between the actors. Paul Verhoeven's Dutch background brought a nice provocative edge to the film that caused quite a stir. He pushed the boundaries of using sex in a mainstream film. Basic Instinct was a fascinating mix of suspense and sex. Michael Caton-Jones remains pretty tame, resulting in a film that is less sexy. I did like the way Basic Instinct 2 explores Catherine's desire to manipulate. But her dangerous psychological game doesn't reach a dramatic climax and goes on a bit too long.
To sum things up, Sharon Stone is still hot, no doubt about it! But Basic Instinct 2 is, compared to its predecessor, a redundant film.
