Director Michael Bay made his directorial debut with the original Bad Boys movie and became one of the hottest directors to date. The Rock, Armageddon, Pearl Harbor, all movies mostly hated by critics but very powerful at the box office. I also hated the movies as critic (except for The Rock) but I just love the movies as a filmgeek. I seriously get a woody just to see an explosion, car chases, gun battle and Bay is the man who masters the craft of action galore. Bay reaches back to the beginning with the sequel to Bad Boys, the movie that also launched the careers of Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. The story in a nutshell (though it was hard to find one): Miami PD detectives Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence) and Mike Lowrey (Will Smith) are chasing a slick drug lord Hector Juan Carlos but are also interfering with the DEA's operation that's trying to bust the same dealer. While Lowrey is breaking every rule in the book, destroying everything on his path including his partner's swimming pool, Burnett already requested a transfer to another department. Unfortunately Burnett's plans to leave his destructive partner are being delayed when he finds out that his sister Sydney is involved as a undercover DEA agent and has infiltrated Hector's gang. As I mentioned before, the movie doesn't rely on a character driven story. The movie is just a reason to bring the comic talents of Smith and Lawrence together and to blow things up. The chemistry between the two actors is absolutely wonderful and goes in the tradition of Riggs and Murtaugh (Gibson and Glover) and even J.J. McClure and Victor (Burt Reynolds and Dom Deluise). The hilarious scenes are combined with extremely violent action sequences; bullet time head entries, decapitations, bodies blowing up just to give an example. Michael Bay creates a no holds barred action vehicle. The car chase scene is one of the highlights of the movie that start off with an intense shoot-out that brings you right in the middle of the action. Bad Boys 2's visual style is grittier, down to earth and less slick than most of Bay's movies but he still reinvents some amazing camera moves and unusual angels that go straight through walls and crashing cars. Bad Boys 2 is an aggressive bumpy ride, I hate it as a critic and I fucking love it as a filmgeek.
