I'm fascinated by movies with multiple storylines, like Pulp Fiction and Magnolia to give an example. Finding the perfect balance, giving each story enough time and space, connecting each plot at the end, that's a tough job. Alejandro González Iñárritu is that kind of director who demands your attention by telling several dramatic, intense stories. Amores Perros was his big breakthrough, followed by 21Grams starring Sean Penn and Naomi Watts. His latest, Babel, delivers not one but four different stories, which are somehow all related to each other. I'll do my best to give you a short synopsis.
An American couple, on holiday in Morocco, gets hit by a bullet. A bullet being fired by two young local boys, sons of a poor farmer. A Mexican nanny, who takes care of the American couple's kids, will miss her son's wedding due to the incident. And in Tokyo, a deaf Japanese teen that recently lost her mother, can't cope with her feelings and sexuality. Her father is desperate, her father is also the one who donated his gun to the Moroccan farmer.
Amazing stories with a bizarre twist, all being driven by actions that happen outside that particular story. Alejandro once again finds the perfect balance, I simply wanted to hit fast forward because I really wanted to know how each story would end. Every story grabs you, and keeps you fascinated till the very dramatic end.
Babel is realistic, real people, and makes you forget that part of the cast contains the megastars Cate Blanchett and Brad Pitt.
