Steve Carell played small but funny supporting roles in Will Ferrell's Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy and Jim Carrey's Bruce Almighthy. The 40 Year-Old Virgin is Carell's first leading role and he stars opposite Paul Rudd, Romany Malco, Seth Rogen and Catherine Keener. Judd Apatow directs and wrote the script together with Steve Carell.
The story in a nutshell:
Andy Stitzer's (Steve Carell) colleagues discover that their 40-year old friend is still a virgin. They want to help him… and get him laid. They take him to singles parties and even arrange a prostitute but is doesn't work out. Andy wants to do it his own way. He meets the woman of his life, Trish (Catherine Keener), but he doesn't know how to tell her about his situation.
The 40 Year-Old Virgin is, just like Wedding Crashers, one of the few R-rated comedies which are being released this year. Of course, a film with this subject needs to be told without keeping the ratings in mind. The 40 Year-Old Virgin covers all the sexual oriented jokes that you'd expect but it smartly doesn't make it too rancid. Steve Carell's character, Andy Stitzer, is perfectly written, which keeps the film interesting. Steve Carell's outstanding performance as the naive Andy earns him a spot next to the other great comedians like Ben Stiller, Jim Carrey and Will Ferrell.
The film offers plenty of extremely funny moments and it managed to keep this level up all the way through the end. The 40 Year-Old Virgin is a top-notch comedy and a great workout for your laughing-muscles.
