X-Men: First Class
Director: Matthew Vaughn
Actors: James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Kevin Bacon, Rose Byrne, Jennifer Lawrence, January Jones

Bryan Singer, director of the first two X-Men films, fabricated the idea for a prequel, in which Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr (a.k.a. Magneto) meet for the first time, and recruit other mutants to join the X-Men. Unfortunately, Singer wasn't able to direct because of scheduling problems, Matthew Vaughn (Kick-Ass) was approached to take care of X-Men: First Class instead.

First Class stars James McAvoy (Wanted) as Xavier opposite Michael Fassbender, known for his performance in Inglourious Basterds, as Lensherr. The film is set in the 60s, during the Cold War and Cuba Crisis. The X-Men take on the powerful mutant Sebastian Shaw, an excellent role portrayed by Kevin Bacon, who plans to provoke a third world war.

The prequel tells the interesting story of the bond between Charles and Erik, and how they clash because of their different ideals. McAvoy is perfect as the charming Xavier, Fassbender fascinates with his cool and driven Bond-like character. The rest of the mutants, well, it's not that important, it's the moments between Xavier and Magneto that count, where the film really delivers, and of course, Kevin Bacon as the brutal adversary.

Matthew Vaughn uses historical moments, such as the Cold War, mixed with the comic history of the mutants, which results in a very special superhero flick. The concept is cleverly woven into the political situation of that time, all delivered with a classy 60s vibe. X-Men: First Class is epic, great characters, but most of all a perfect summer movie experience.
