Rango
Director: Gore Verbinski
Actors: Johnny Depp, Isla Fisher, Abigail Breslin, Ned Beatty, Alfred Molina, Harry Dean Stanton
Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski and Captain Jack himself, Johnny Depp, are back for another interesting project, which is the animated feature Rango.
The little desert town Dirt is in trouble, the water is gone, but there's hope when a stranger, the chameleon Rango (voiced by Johnny Depp), becomes the new sheriff in town. Rango finally gets the chance to portray the hero he always wanted to be, but the job is a lot tougher than he expected.
Rango's approach and concept is different compared to other animated features. With Gore Verbinski's background, Rango really feels like a live-action film. Johnny Depp takes it to another level with his bizarre performance of the chameleon with an identity crisis.
The story is a bit messy and incoherent the first half of the show, which makes it hard to join Rango's emotional ride. But the film finally finds its balance once the story shifts from comedy to drama.
Rango's animation, with the look and feel of Sergio Leone's spaghetti westerns, is overwhelming. The film delivers a unique mix of stylized and realistic characters and environments. Rango has a bumpy start though, but it strikes back with moments of brilliance, which turns this flick into a weird but fun modern western.
