Drive Angry 3D
Director: Patrick Lussier
Actors: Nicolas Cage, Amber Heard, William Fichtner, Billy Burke, David Morse
Nicolas Cage portrays the role of the mysterious traveler Milton. His background is vague, but the man is driven with one purpose; to find his granddaughter, who's being held by the cult leader Jonah King (Billy Burke). Milton finds a team mate, the feisty waitress Piper (Amber Heard), who has an opportunity to do something with her life in helping him out.
Director Patrick Lussier delivers a down and dirty action flick, without being subtle or without multi-layered characters bringing meaningful dialogs. The opening sequence starts with body parts being shot to smithereens, which sets the tone for the rest of the film. The acting is, just like the action, straightforward, with a cool role of Nicolas Cage and William Fichtner in a supporting role, who really enjoys playing the part.
The filmmakers' intension was to deliver an old school 70s movie, but they couldn't nail the B-film vibe, something Rodriguez and Tarantino managed to do in their Grindhouse flicks (Planet Terror, Death Proof and Machete).
Nicolas Cage is a big star who doesn't fit in the film, but it's also pretty cool he's doing these kind of flicks anyway. Drive Angry, with surprisingly great 3D, is for those who love the genre. It's an entertaining, guilty pleasure kind of ride.
