Movie: X-Men Origins: Wolverine
Director: Gavin Hood
Actors: Hugh Jackman, Liev Schreiber, Danny Huston, Ryan Reynolds, Lynn Collins, Dominic Monaghan, Will i Am, Kevin Durand

X-Men Origins: Wolverine is the first X-Men spin-off, which offers detailed background information about the birth of our favorite X-Men member, Logan, a.k.a. Wolverine. Hugh Jackman is back to reprise the role of the superhero with the charming sideburns, Gavin Hood (Tsotsi and Rendition) is the director.
Logan and his brother Victor (Liev Schreiber) are members of a special mutant task force, under the command of William Stryker (Danny Huston). One of their dangerous missions ends with a lot of bloodshed, and Logan decides to leave the group. Years later, a former mutant group member is being killed, and it looks like Victor is involved. Time for Logan to get back in action.

To be honest, I needed some time to think it over before I wrote this review. I'm a huge fan of the comics and films (well, except X-Men: The Last Stand), I was really hoping that Wolverine would reach the same level of the previous flicks. This spin-off has its good, but unfortunately, also disappointing moments. One of problems is the messy script, loaded with other mutants (who deserve more screen time in another movie than their quick appearance in this one), with a rush through plot twist. It feels like Wolverine is being set up as one big introduction to the X-Men films. I'd prefer a Wolverine spin-off in which Logan really goes solo, takes on the super villains by himself, but also has to deliver the inner battle of a man versus the beast within. They didn't crack this subject matter entirely in this film.
Director Gavin Hood is having trouble directing his first visual effects heavy film. The visual effects doesn't always reach the high standard, the action is spectacular though but at times also mediocre and repetitive.
But the good part, in two words; Hugh Jackman! More ripped, tougher and dangerous than ever. And there is also the amazing performance of Liev Schreiber who is just perfect as the violent super villain. My favorite scenes of the movie are the opening sequence and the birth of Wolverine.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine somehow doesn't take off from the start and fails to deliver the epic superhero spectacle like X-Men and X2. The film doesn't completely meet my expectations, but thanks to Hugh Jackman, X-Men Origins: Wolverine's overall impression is good enough for an entertaining superhero flick. Fortunately, the film offers some hope, the scene right after the end credits, hints at a story line from Chris Claremont's legendary comic, in which Wolverine travels to Japan. Bring on the sequel!

A bit disappointing, but Hugh Jackman is great!
