Tom Cruise plays the lead in Valkyrie, a story based on the true events of Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, an officer who loves his country but doesn't like the motives of his leader. Stauffenberg is being approached by the German resistance that includes General von Tresckow (Kenneth Branagh), General Olbricht (Bill Nighy), Dr. Carl Goerdeler (Kevin McNally) and Ludwig Beck (Terence Stamp). Claus comes up with a daring proposal to use Hitler's emergency plan, named Valkyrie, against him to stage a coupe. The operation is being led by Stauffenberg himself, who needs to find allies outside the resistance, and most important, needs to find a way to get close, real close, to Hitler.
Next to the incredible performances of Cruise, Branagh, Nighy, McNally and Stamp, there's also Tom Wilkinson as the unreliable General Fromm, Eddie Izzard, Christian Berkel and Dutch actresses Halina Reijn and Carice van Houten as Stauffenberg's wife.
Director Bryan Singer (X-Men, Superman Returns) re-teams with The Usual Suspects writer Christopher McQuarrie, who co-wrote the character-driven Valkyrie script with Nathan Alexander.
Valkyrie centers on an event, which is not that familiar outside Germany, and focuses on brave characters that must make a stand, going beyond, knowing that the chance of success is minimal. Singer fastens the pace and keeps up the nerve-racking suspense till the last minute. And that's pretty impressive, cause the downside of the film is that you already know the outcome of the operation, but you're still rooting for a 'happy end'. Valkyrie is an astonishing edge-of-your-seat thriller with a superior cast. It's nice to see Singer making a smaller pic again, without the big visual effects.
