New Moon is the second flick that is based on the successful Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer. Vampire Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) decides to leave his girlfriend Bella Swan (Kristin Stewart) to protect her. Bella, left behind with a broken heart, finds comfort with her friend Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner), who's turned into a real man since the first film. Bella has also noticed his new developed biceps and they slowly become more than just friends, until she discovers that Jacob has a deep dark secret.
The forbidden love between Bella and vampire Edward shifts to another forbidden love between Bella and the wild werewolf, Jacob. Loving a leech on two legs or the smell of a wet dog, the concept all tend towards a long and dragging experience but somehow director Chris Weitz (The Golden Compass) knows how to keep the story interesting. The film takes time to let the characters grow and before you know it, you're feeling like an innocent schoolgirl, swept away by Bella's lust for impossible love. The atmosphere is wonderful, like a dark fairy tale at times, but mostly nice 'n rough, accompanied by a fantastic soundtrack. The visual effects are subtle, never over the top, even during the werewolf transformation, so the focus stays on the characters.
Unfortunately, the desire for a forbidden love ultimately demands a climax, you can feel the tension, but it never gets to the big finale. We'll probably get to see this in the next film.
Overall, I was pleasantly surprised and I really enjoyed New Moon. I'm looking forward how the rest of the story unfolds.
