Armed men, led by (John Travolta), hijack a New York City subway train, holding the passengers hostage and demanding millions of dollars. Walter Garber (Denzel Washington), a NYC subway dispatcher, unwillingly becomes the negotiator. Ryder begins his psychological mind game, in which not only the passengers but also Garber becomes the target.
Director Tony Scott can't get enough of Denzel Washington, they previously worked together on Deja Vu, Man on Fire and Crimson Tide. The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3, which is a remake of the 1974 original, looks like a standard hostage drama at first, but fortunately brings something new to the plate. Screenwriter Brian Helgeland presents a tight script with interesting characters that all seem to have a skeleton in the closet. You can tell that Travolta is having a blast as Ryder, who knows how to get inside the head of his opponents and pushes them to the limit. The amazing interaction between Denzel Washington and John Travolta are the flick's highlights. I also enjoyed the supporting cast with John Turturro as the official negotiator put on a side track and James Gandolfini as the shady NY mayor.
The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 is entertaining thanks to the wonderful cast and the chemistry between the main two characters. Tony Scott delivered a solid thriller, and that, on the other hand, is also the film's weak spot. It all feels a bit routine, and I'd expected a bit more fire from the director.
