John Conner (Christian Bale), soldier of the Resistance, finds himself in the midst of the war against the machines. The Terminators are desperately searching for a man called Kyle Reese (Anton Yelchin), who's an important target for both sides. Conner encounters the mysterious Marcus Wright (Sam Worthington), a man with a dark past and intel on Kyle Reese. But can Marcus be trusted?
The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgement Day, two flicks that inspired me and many other film fans. It's hard to embrace Terminator Salvation, which was made without the guidance of creator James Cameron or the presence of Schwarzenegger, who did play the leading role in the entertaining Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines. Part four is set in the future, at the beginning of the war with Terminators of an older, bigger kind. The quest for Kyle Reese, John Conner who must earn a leading role at the Resistance, and the inner-battle of Marcus Wright, bring an interesting twist to the tale. Sam Worthington's performance as a cyborg with a memory from the past impresses the most. Christian Bale is convincing as John Conner, but doesn't get enough room to bring more to the character. There is plenty of material to offer something new to the plate, but unfortunately the filmmakers don't go all the way. Besides a few cool references to the previous flicks, McG's Terminator Salvation becomes too much of a walk down memory lane, as if he's working his way down a list of the things fans would like to see.
I've got mixed feelings while watching Terminator Salvation. The story has got potential but I'm missing the epic battle between a giant Terminator army and a small group of human soldiers. That said, I really like McG's tone and style. His sci-fi war flick has got some pretty sweet visual effects, explosive action and cyborg battles. And I must admit that Linda Hamilton's voice-over and Schwarzenegger's cameo made my geek-heart run faster. I'd say, let's give the flick a chance!
