Captain James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock are back in a Star Trek flick, which serves as a relaunch of the franchise with a story that begins from scratch. The film centers on how the young, rebellious Kirk (Chris Pine) meets the Vulcan named Spock (Zachary Quinto) for the first time. They embark on their first U.S.S. Enterprise mission, with its rookie crew; McCoy (Karl Urban), Uhura (Zoe Zaldana), Sulu (John Cho), Chekov (Anton Yelchin) and Scotty (Simon Pegg). Starship Enterprise's mission is to stop the Romulan Nero, portrayed by Eric Bana, who has a score to settle with mankind.
The filmmakers manage to come up with an inventive story that introduces Kirk, Spock and the rest of the crew, and guess what, Kirk and Spock can't stand each other! This concept gives the story a very entertaining impulse. The actors are perfect for their roles, Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto mix their input with the recognizable characters, portrayed by William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy, without simply copying them. The film also offers more background information on other crew members, with their famous one-liners smartly woven into the fantastic script.
The tone and style of J.J. Abrams' flick is grittier than the TV series and previous films. Abrams future has contemporary references, which makes the overall experience more realistic. The director uses the astonishing visual effects as support of the story, without becoming a gimmick or 'the jaw-dropping visual effects moment'. Daniel Mindel's cinematography with the lens catching the light is simply stunning, bringing the picture a beautiful vintage look.
Director J.J. Abrams, writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman deliver not only a Star Trek flick that will please the hardcore fans, they also deliver a highly entertaining sci-fi thrill-ride for the ones who aren't familiar with the Star Trek phenomenon.
