Movie: Inglourious Basterds
Director: Quentin Tarantino
Actors: Brad Pitt, Mélanie Laurent, Christoph Waltz, Eli Roth, Diane Kruger, Til Schweiger

Quentin Tarantino is back with an old fashioned war movie, named Inglourious Basterds. His WWII flick starts with 'Once upon a time in Nazi-occupied France', and this introduction also reveals that it's a slightly different war flick with a little Tarantino-twist.
Lieutenant Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) organizes a group of Jewish American soldiers, known as 'The Basterds', to perform swift, shocking acts of retribution throughout Europe. In other words, slaughter as many Nazis as possible. Raine joins the German actrice and undercover agent Bridget von Hammersmark (Diane Kruger) on a mission to take down the leaders of the Third Reich. The plan is to get them during a special happening in a French movie theatre. But Shosanna Dreyfus (Mélanie Laurent), the Jewish owner of the theatre, also has a score to settle with these guys.

Inglourious Basterds includes an incredible international cast. Brad Pitt is hilarious as the screwed up American Lieutenant. The Basterds aren't well-trained fighting machines, but a bunch of bumbling, yet mentally disturbed individuals. Eli Roth's performance is pretty cool as the Basterd who uses a baseball bat on his German victims. But The Basterds are just a piece of the overall story. Mélanie Laurent is fantastic as Shosanna, a story line that forms the emotional heart of the film. Tarantino balances out the tone nicely and prevents the flick from becoming just one big hilarious slaughter fest. The best part of the flick is Christoph Waltz as Col. Hans Landa. Landa is a quiet, almost sympathetic villain, until he reveals his dark side. Landa's scenes are wonderfully written and the performances are breathtaking.

Inglourious Basterds surprises, because it's not the war flick you'd expect from Tarantino. The film doesn't only revolve around The Basterds, and that's a bit disappointing, 'cause I would really love to see more of the Nazi Hunters in action. But what Tarantino does deliver is one of his most suspenseful flicks. He takes his time, intrigues by letting the scenes unfold, teasingly slow at times, but with a suspenseful and surprising climax. It's hard to write a review from an objective point of view, but one thing's for sure, the filmmaker once again has written and directed an unusual, unique war flick. The Inglourious Basterd himself proves that he still masters the writing of edgy dialogs mixed with brutal hilarity.

Tarantino masterpiece!
