Titanic was his last film, made some documentaries after that, and now the director is finally back with a new spectacle that uses the latest film and 3D technique, created by Cameron himself.
Former Marine Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) is recruited to join a mission on the planet Pandora, where a corporate consortium is mining a mineral that is the key to solving the Earth's energy crisis. Unfortunately, the atmosphere of Pandora is toxic. Thanks to a special Avatar-program, in which human 'drivers' have their consciousness linked to a remotely-controlled biological body, they're able to move around the planet. Jake enters the mind of a genetically engineered creature, a mix of human DNA and DNA from the natives of Pandora: the Na'vi. With his new body, Jake infiltrates the clan, who has become a major obstacle to mining the material.
James Cameron wrote the script for Avatar 15 years ago. He quickly discovered that it was impossible to adapt. But with the current CG techniques, many doors were opened, and the time was right to dust off that old script. Avatar is set in another world, created with the help of photorealistic CGI, where Cameron melts live-action and CG together in one stunning powerhouse. I was totally taken by the visual effects at first, and couldn't concentrate on the story, but as I got used to the new world and focused on the characters, it quickly became clear which direction it would lead to. It's a familiar concept that unfortunately makes the film predictable. But on the other hand, the interesting twist is using the familiar theme in a new setting, in which the humans are the biggest threat.
Despite the predictable story, the sometimes over-the-top drama, thickened by James Horner's disappointing score (sorry, James), Avatar still is an overwhelming film.
The sci-fi epic lives up to its high expectation, most of the time, and thanks to IMAX 3D, I get excited just thinking about this format, the flick becomes an intense experience. Avatar is total escapism, you forget your earthly problems, it transports you to another world, with bigger problems though, but breathtaking landscapes, exotic animals, sexy blue creatures, hunted down by violent sci-fi vehicles and awesome AMP suits.
Cameron fucking did it again, he pushes the boundaries of cinema in a groundbreaking epic.
