There are many theories about the calendar and prophecy of the Maya, and if it's up to director Roland Emmerich, it simply means that in 2012 the world will come to an end.
The film 2012 follows several characters and their stories leading up to the biggest disaster in history. We have Jackson Curtis (John Cusack), a failing author and divorced father who sees his kids growing up with their new dad. There's the scientist Adrian Helmsley (Chiwetel Ejifor) who discovers that the Earth's plates are shifting drastically with catastrophic results. A president (Danny Glover) and other leaders of the world are secretly trying to come up with a plan. We have a semi-bad guy Chief of staff Carl Anheuser (Oliver Platt) and the conspiracy theory talk show host Charlie Frost (Woody Harrelson) who discovers the government's plans.
With the help of good ol' movie magic, the storylines and characters all come together at the exact right time in the story. It sometimes really looks like a small world after all, well, right before it's total destruction.
Roland Emmerich loves epic spectacles, and has made some highly entertaining popcorn flicks in the past, such as Stargate, Independence Day, The Patriot and The Day After Tomorrow. You know, if there's someone who's able to destroy the world with the help of Aliens, a mutated lizard or extreme natural disasters, it's our German friend. Unfortunately, his previous awful flick 10,000 BC pissed me off on many levels. And he does it again with his next epic movie, 2012. I didn't get that aggravated but I still felt like a volcano about to burst. 2012 contains the same cliché characters, we've got the divorced father, his competitor the successful step dad, the sympathetic scientist… and even the crazy talk show host living in the woods. The flick goes from one corny moment to the other. And why do they always have a clock, which shows how much time we've got left on this world, and it nails it down to the last second, the clock is that good!
That said, guys, I must admit that 2012 somewhat lives up to its expectations. The film relies on its visual effects, which are truly stunning. It's hard to hide your grin during the rollercoaster ride of earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanoes that destroy entire cities.
2012 is an epic heavyweight that needs to be seen on a huge screen and, well, the corny moments, we just have to take them for granted this time. It's the end of the world as Roland Emmerich knows it, and it's pretty ugly.
