Ben Stiller, Jack Black and Robert Downey Jr. portray three self-absorbed actors who are cast in the biggest war flick ever. Tugg Speedman (Ben Stiller) is the action hero trying to save his career, Jeff Portny (Jack Black) is the comedian with a coke and booze filled private life and Kirk Lazarus (Robert Downey Jr.) is the Australian award-winning method actor who surgically dyed his skin to play the role of the African-American sergeant Lincoln Osiris.
Director Damien Cockburn (Steve Coogan) is having a hard time to get the prima donna actors working together on the set. He decides to drop them into the jungle for a more basic approach, where hidden cameras register their male bonding experience. The thin line between fiction and reality disappears when the group encounters the local drug lords.
The edgy R-Rated comedy, which is directed and co-written by Ben Stiller, takes off with a bunch of hilarious fake trailers, starring the actors from the war flick in the making. The trailer with Downey's character Kirk Lazarus, which revolves around the forbidden love between two monks (one is played by Tobey Maguire) is the funniest highlight of the year! We also get to see Nick Nolte as the consulting war veteran on set, Matthew McConaughey is Tugg Speedman's agent, and an unrecognizable Tom Cruise is the disgusting, foul mouthed producer Les Grossman.
The incredible cast is reason enough to check out Tropic Thunder. Especially the hilarious performance by Tom Cruise and the fantastic Robert Downey Jr. who is not only funny but also gives his character heart in the midst of all the insanity. I know, it's hard to keep the rest of the flick in mind with such a great cast, 'cause the story looses its strength halfway through the pic. That said, all credit goes to Ben Stiller who pushes the politically incorrect comedy to the limit and somehow manages to get away with it.
