Director Stephen Sommers delivered with The Mummy and The Mummy Returns two good ol' fashioned adventure flicks. The third installment, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, got a new director, Rob Cohen, who's responsible for the slick action vehicles The Fast and the Furious and xXx. Rachel Weisz was replaced by Maria Bello as Evelyn, Brendan Fraser reprises his role as the adventurer Rick O'Connell.
The big difference between the new flick and the previous ones is that they smartly replaced the Egyptian setting for a Chinese backdrop, in which the ruthless Emperor Han (Jet Li) is brought back to life. Centuries ago, sorceress Zi Juan (Michelle Yeoh) fought the Emperor and stopped him. But this time, the Emperor gets a new chance to rule his empire, and this time he's also got supernatural powers and a huge terracotta army to back him up.
The first two flicks were okay and offered a nice mix of adventure and comedy. Unfortunately, I really missed the chemistry between the actors in The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz were a cute couple, but I miss something now Maria Bello has taken over the role. Luke Ford doesn't convince as Rick O'Connell's son, Brendan Fraser looks just as old as his 'younger' apprentice. And, Jet Li, I love the guy, but his role as the villain is simply not scary or threatening.
Director Rob Cohen tries hard to deliver a spectacular new adventure but besides the cool special effects and beautiful sets, the film doesn't click on many, many levels. Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor is a been-there-done-that-flick, a fortune cookie without content.
