The Dark Knight is the follow up to Christopher Nolan's masterpiece Batman Begins, which offered a relaunch of the franchise with a more back to basics approach. Batman Begins found a unique and original way to tell the birth of our superhero. The Dark Knight jumps right into the action and also introduces one of Batman's biggest foes, The Joker. Batman (Christian Bale) sets out with the help of Lt. Gordon (Gary Oldman) and District Attorney Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) to destroy organized crime in Gotham City for good. Until The Joker (Heath Ledger) appears and brings more chaos to the city by turning the police force and criminal organizations upside down.

Director Christopher Nolan wrote an intelligent script together with David S. Goyer and Jonathan Nolan, which brings the superhero genre down to the real world with real characters. In fact, this isn't a superhero flick, it's a gritty cop thriller, set in a corrupt city on the verge of total anarchy. And though the hero wears a mask and cape, he still got his limitations, just like The Joker who is driven by a dark past and doesn't need to attract attention with a colorful appearance or over-the-top acting. Nope, Heath Ledger is very subtle with his impressive performance. His posture, his eyes, and that horrifying, maniacal grin, immortalizes his Joker as one of the most dangerous villains ever. Besides Ledger, Aaron Eckhart also impresses with the double-layered character known as Harvey Dent, the District Attorney who slowly bends and eventually breaks the law to get what he wants. To be honest, every role, even the small ones are just fantastic, like Michael Caine as Albert, Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox and Maggie Gyllenhaal does a great job as Rachel Dawes.

Christopher Nolan pushes the suspense to an unprecedented level, he plays with you just like The Joker does with Gotham, he doesn't give you one second to catch your breath, 'cause the story remains unpredictable till the bitter end. The stylish look, spectacular action that doesn't take the character driven story off balance, make The Dark Knight an epic crime thriller, which is simply fucking perfect on every level.
