Quantum of Solace is a direct follow-up to Casino Royale, in which James Bond (Daniel Craig) tries to reveal the mastermind behind a secret organization who blackmailed Vesper. This very personal mission jeopardizes his career as a secret agent. M (Judi Dench) slowly loses control over her rogue agent. Bond gets in contact with the breathtakingly beautiful Camille (Olga Kurylenko) who leads him to the dangerous businessman Greene (Mathieu Amalric), who plays an important role within the mysterious organization.
Just like its predecessor, Quantum of Solace kicks off pretty intense with a powerful and explosive opening sequence. Just seconds into the movie, you're right in the middle of a spectacular car chase, followed by a jaw-dropping rooftop chase. But after that, the pace slows down, and the story centers on betrayal, conspiracies, a coup and deception, causing this film critic to lose track of the overall picture.
Getting Marc Forster to direct the new Bond was an interesting decision. With his overwhelming drama flicks Monster's Ball, Finding Neverland and The Kite Runner, I expected a very character-driven Bond, an emotional rollercoaster combined with great action. But unfortunately Forster somehow doesn't make this Bond flick his own and doesn't deliver the more dramatic action vehicle I'd expected. Once again, just like Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace begins very promising but collapses as the movie progresses. Bond's driven, obsessive behavior remains too shallow and that's why I couldn't connect with our main character. The climax isn't that exciting and doesn't match the incredible first scene of the flick. And another big flaw of the film is the movie's villain Dominic Greene, played by Mathieu Amalric. He just isn't a worthy Bond villain, someone who could take on 007.
That said, though Quantum of Solace isn't the James Bond I'd expected, Daniel Craig still rocks as the aggressive secret agent, and not only saves the world but also makes the flick a somewhat entertaining one.
