Movie: Iron Man
Director: Jon Favreau
Actors: Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Terrence Howard, Jeff Bridges

Tony Stark, a billionaire industrialist and inventor, is kidnapped in Afghanistan, where he's forced to develop a weapon of mass destruction. The filthy rich playboy sees his life from a different perspective now. He decides to secretly create a power suit, which helps him to escape. Back in the States, Tony realizes that his company, who delivers weapons for the US Military, should change its policy drastically. An upgrade of his 'iron suit,' will help him to solve his problems and set things straight once and for all. A new superhero is born, his name is Iron Man!

Iron Man is, just like Spider-Man, Hulk, X-Men and Fantastic Four, created by Marvel's Stan Lee. But Tony Stark a.k.a Iron Man offers something new though. He's an alcoholic, an arrogant prick and most amazing, he doesn't have superpowers. Casting Robert Downey Jr, who also has (or had) a white-powder-coated lifestyle with a drop of alcohol, makes the role far more interesting. Actor-turned-director, Jon Favreau, managed to add more famous names to the cast. Gwyneth Paltrow is Stark's stubborn assistant Pepper, Terrence Howard plays Stark's friend Jim Rhodes. The bad guy Obadiah Stane is portrayed by Jeff Bridges. This wonderful supporting cast brings a little more spark to their smaller, one-dimensional roles. Bridges, with shaved head, delivers a nice performance as the movie's villain, without acting over-the-top. But the heart of the flick is Robert Downey Jr., period, whose performance is in a way nonchalant and very hilarious.

Because the film is set up as an origin story, it also suffers from the inevitable clichés. Iron Man is exactly like I expected it to be. It lives up to its expectation, but I would have liked it to be more fresh and also more suspenseful as the movie reaches its third act, which could lift the movie above the superhero average. Hopefully the sequel will offer a story with more backbone. Besides the flaws, director Jon Favreau did a solid job. The impressive cast, spectacular visual effects and kick-ass Iron Man suit by the Stan Winston Studio, all help to create a highly entertaining superhero flick.

Entertaining superhero flick!
