In the sci fi flick Babylon A.D., wars have devastated the Earth. Toorop (Vin Diesel) managed to survive the many battles as a mercenary in the new world. Mafia, which controls Eastern Europe, hires Toorop to transport the mysterious woman Aurora (Mélanie Thierry) from Russia to New York. The long journey becomes a tough one as Toorop finds out more about the mystery that surrounds Aurora.
There are some juicy rumors floating on the web about the production of Babylon A.D. The most important one, which's actually more than just a rumor, is that the film has been pushed back from the beginning of this year to the end of the summer. This usually suggests that a movie needs more time to fix some problems, hoping to still turn it into an enjoyable film. The other rumor is the clash of egos between French director Matheu Kassovitz and star of the flick, Vin Diesel. But, you know, it all comes down to the end result of the film, it doesn't matter how they get there.
Here's the deal, Babylon A.D. feels like a real international production, and you can interpret this in many ways. What I'm trying to say is that besides the relatively big budget, the flick still feels like one big B-movie and not the sci-fi epic that Kassovitz probably had in mind. I can tell you one thing, it's not the fault of Vin Diesel nor the always wonderful Michelle Yeoh (who plays Aurora's chaperon), they are trying their best to give the one-dimensional characters more depth. The real flaws of this movie are the cliché dialogs, one-liners, awful narration, a story that's been told in other (and better) post-apocalyptic films and in the end, the flick simply isn't thrilling enough. Who's to blame for the mess, I don't know for sure, Matheu Kassovitz wants to bring an intelligent, sophisticated sci-fi epic, but is taking a bad script a bit too serious and simply fails to deliver the goods.
