Newsflash:
Hi guys, already the last update of the week... but The Regster will be back with the latest movie news this weekend, enjoy!:
Director Ron Howard and star Tom Hanks are in final talks for Angels & Demons. The prequel to Dan Brown's novel The Da Vinci Code once again stars professor Robert Langdon, which will be played by Hanks. Source: The Hollywood Reporter
Brendan Fraser will not only return for The Mummy 3, he also became a very rich man, cause they'd paid a lot to bring him back. Unfortunately, Rachel Weisz will not reprise her role (they were out of money?). Rob Cohen will direct the film, set in China, and Jet Li has been cast as the villain. Source: Variety
The first shot of Iron Man's grey suit is now online! Looks like the Iron Giant though, but I love it! Iron Man is directed by Jon Favreau and stars Robert Downey Jr., Terrence Howard and Gwyneth Paltrow.

The Jackie Chan and Jet Li vehicle has a title; The Forbidden Kingdom! Pretty cool! The martial arts flick that revolves around the legend of the Monkey King, will be directed by Rob Minkoff (Stuart Little, The Lion King), which means that the film will have a more family-friendly approach. Master Yuen Wo Ping (The Matrix) will direct the fight sequences! Production starts on May 2nd in China.
First shot of Steve Carell (40 Year Old Virgin) and Anne Hathaway in the comedy Get Smart is online! The film is based on the 1965 TV series and is directed by Peter Segal. Rest of the cast includes The Rock, Terence Stamp and Alan Arkin.

Goyer talks Scanners!!!:
Hi guys, I've got a bunch of nice tidbits about upcoming horror flicks in today's update. Lets kick off with the Scanners remake, which will be directed by Darren Lynn (Saw II). I love David Cronenberg's original version about telekinetic humans with the ability to literally blow people's minds. Lots of exploding heads, if you know what I mean! Now, I'm not that fond of all these horror remakes, but Scanners will be written by David S. Goyer, the writer of the Blade trilogy and Batman Begins. Here's what he's aiming at with the remake;
"One of the things that's also great about Scanners was the fact that Cronenberg embeds so much subtext into his stories. So we've tried to keep the spirit of that and kind of transpose that into a post-9/11 world, if you can imagine what Scanners would be involved in in that kind of world. That's what we're attempting to do here.
I'm a huge Cronenberg fan, and Scanners was definitely one of my favorite films as a kid. What we're trying to do is take all the best elements of that. ... He obviously made it on a shoestring budget, so this time hopefully we can expand upon what he did."
This could be one hell of a cool horror flick, don't ya think?

Dougherty talks Trick 'r Treat:
Superman Returns co-writer, Michael Dougherty, makes his directorial debut with the Halloween-themed horror film Trick 'r Treat. The man told Sci-fi Wire that his film will be different than the style of the current horror flicks;
"You had asked what separates this film from the current slate of horror films out there, and I think it is that dose of black comedy. You know, in my mind the film is very much inspired by Tim Burton, Edward Gorey, Charles Addams, and those are all artists who created stories that feature horrific elements, but it's OK if you laugh at them. ... It's OK to me if half the audience is laughing, and half the audience is screaming. But this subgenre ... kind of went away, and I just kind of want to bring it back. ... What we've been exposed to recently in horror is very similar to what we were going through in the '70s. It's like we have Hills Have Eyes, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Amityville Horror, like, all these names sound very familiar. But if you look back at where the late '70s films went to, they went into early '80s films, so you had American Werewolf in London, you had Poltergeist, Nightmare on Elm Street, Creepshow. ... There came a point where people realized, ... 'OK, I've had my hardcore exploitation horror films.' And people started injecting black comedy and humor into the horror. And I'm hoping that trend kind of repeats itself again, and we head in that direction."
Trick 'r Treat will be produced by Bryan Singer and stars Brian Cox and Anna Paquin.

Tarantino talks Vega brothers:
Quentin Tarantino had plans for a film that centered on the Vega brothers, Michael Madsen in Reservoir Dogs and John Travolta in Pulp Fiction. The sequel/prequel to my favorite flicks seemed too good to be true, the director revealed that it's unlikely that Vega brothers will see the light of day;
"I even had a title for it. It was called Double V Vega. It actually would have taken place during the time Vincent was in Amsterdam, when he was running one of Marcellus' clubs in Amsterdam. And Vic goes to visit him.
But we're a little older now, and since they both died - it would have to be a prequel. I actually came up with a way I could have done it, even being older and dead where they all had older brothers and both of their brothers got together because the two guys died. And they wanted revenge or something like that. But now, they [the actors] are too old for that... I got to say, it's kind of unlikely now."
So what's next for Quentin Tarantino? Well, the director will probably focus on his war epic Inglorious Bastards. I'll keep you posted.

U.S. Box Office April 06-08:
Interesting plot twist at the American Box Office, guys. The Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino double feature, Grindhouse, entered a disappointing fourth place with only $11 million, despite the positive buzz. The main audience wasn't in for blood 'n' guts this The Easter Weekend and went for the family-friendly flicks instead. The comedy Blades of Glory remained at the top spot, followed by the animated feature Meet the Robinsons and Ice Cube's comedy Are We Done Yet?. Here's the rest of the Top Ten:

1. Blades of Glory - $23,000,000 / $68,383,000
2. Meet the Robinsons - $17,004,000 / $52,235,000
3. Are We Done Yet? - $15,000,000 (new)
4. Grindhouse - $11,591,000 (new)
5. The Reaping - $10,080,000 (new)
6. 300 - $8,825,000 / $193,880,000
6. Wild Hogs - $6,838,000 / $145,453,000
8. Shooter - $5,800,000 / $36,656,000
9. TMNT - $4,935,000 / $46,722,000
