Newsflash:
Hi guys, here's the last update of the week, I'll be back with the next this weekend;
Director J.J. Abrams (Lost) confirmed that a draft of the Star Trek XI script is done! Here's what he had to say about the project; "On the one hand, for people who love Star Trek, the fix that they will get will be really satisfying. For people who've never seen it or know it vaguely, I think they will enjoy it equally, because the movie does not require you to know anything about Star Trek. I would actually prefer that people don't know the series, because I feel like they will come to it with an open mind." I'm not a huge Star Trek fan, but I'm happy for the Trekkies and looking forward to see Captain Kirk back in action! Source: Entertainment Weekly
Director Phyllida Lloyd will bring the hit Broadway musical Mamma Mia! to the big screen! The one and only Meryl Streep is set to play a leading role. Phyllida Lloyd also directed the original "Mamma" in London as well as the Broadway version. The film will be shot in London and Greece. Source: Variety

The Hobbit; The Battle Continues!:
Well, it's time for the other side of the story. New Line head Robert Shaye commented on the whole Hobbit issue. The story so far, Jackson still wants a cut of the Lord of the Rings profits, New Line thinks he's had more than enough and are planning to hire another director for The Hobbit. So as long as Robert Shaye is in charge, Jackson won't be directing another film for the company. Check this out;
"There's a kind of arrogance. Not that I don't think Peter is a good filmmaker and that he hasn't contributed significantly to filmography and made three very good movies. And I don't even expect him to say 'thank you' for having me make it happen and having New Line make it happen. But to think that I, as a functionary in a company that has been around for a long time, but is now owned by a very big conglomerate, would care one bit about trying to cheat the guy, ... he's either had very poor counsel or is completely misinformed and myopic to think that I care whether I give him anything.
He got a quarter of a billion dollars paid to him so far, justifiably, according to contract, completely right, and this guy, who already has received a quarter of a billion dollars, turns around without wanting to have a discussion with us and sues us and refuses to discuss it unless we just give in to his plan. I don't want to work with that guy anymore. Why would I? So the answer is he will never make any movie with New Line Cinema again while I'm still working for the company."

Wow! That doesn't mean we won't see The Hobbit directed by Jackson on the big screen, cause another studio, MGM, holds the distribution rights to the film, so it's not entirely New Line's call. This could become an ugly battle, it already is... but I'll keep you posted of course.

James Cameron's Avatar!:
It's official, James Cameron's next sci-fi epic will be Avatar! Visual effects will be handled by Weta Digital (Lord of the Rings trilogy), principal photography will start in April 2007 for a summer 2009 release. Here are some clips from the press release;
Utilizing a blend of live-action photography and new virtual photorealistic production techniques invented by Cameron's team, Avatar will offer audiences a unique cinematic experience. Avatar will be filmed in 3D for release in the new digital 3D format. For Avatar, Cameron will use revolutionary image-based performance capture techniques, and a real-time virtual camera system, to create new CG worlds and blend them with dramatic performances and live action in ways never before possible.
It is the story of a wounded ex-marine, thrust unwillingly into an effort to settle and exploit an exotic planet rich in bio-diversity, who eventually crosses over to lead the indigenous race in a battle for survival.
"For me, as a lifelong fan of science fiction and action, 'Avatar' is a dream project," Cameron said, "We're creating an entire world, a complete ecosystem of phantasmagorical plants and creatures, and a native people with a rich culture and language. The story is both epic and emotional. The two things that make this film even possible are pioneering advances in CG effects and performance capture, as well as my 22 year relationship with Fox, since only with great trust can you operate so close to the cutting edge. I plan to honor that relationship by bringing them a winner. And I have the team to do it, the best team of artists and technicians I've ever been privileged to work with. This one's going to be a grand adventure."

Kiefer Sutherland talks 24 movie!:
Actor Kiefer Sutherland talked a bit about the 24 feature film. The film will also take place in one day, but they're gonna squeeze it in two hours;
"It's something that we really, really want to make. The real key difference would be that the 24 hour film would be a 2-hour representation of a 24 hour day. It would be the first thing that we didn't do in real time. Mainly, you have to understand, we're making two episodes every three weeks. We would have three months to make a two hour [movie]. Just to have that kind of time to really allow our cinematographer and our director and the writers to focus on such a finite thing, and actually be able to do a film that really has a conclusion, I think would be really exciting not only for us to make but I think for an audience as well."
I love the series, they've just aired the last episode of the fifth season here in Holland, looking forward to see Agent Bauer on the big screen.
