Michael Bay, you love him or you hate him. It's as simple as that. I'm one of the guys who's always looking forward to see another action vehicle from the uber-director. Michael Bay flicks are no-brainers with great cinematography, slow mo images, intense action, huge explosions and amazing car chases. Yep, The Rock, Armageddon, Bad Boys 1 and 2, The Island and even Pearl Harbor. I just love 'em all! (Trust me, it's hard to admit, being a film critic). And now, it's time for a flick about giant robots! First, the err... 'story'.
Autobots and Decepticons are at war, and it all takes place on our planet. In the midst of it all, a young man, Sam Witwicky (Shia LeBeouf), who becomes an important target for both parties. The world gets ready for a giant battle against transforming robots!
How do you make a film that is based on Hasbro toys and a cartoon about giant robots that transform into moving vehicles? That's the dilemma the writers and filmmakers had to cope with. To write a believable story about a far-fetched concept, that's impossible. So in the end, Michael Bay decided to keep the tone pretty light and not that serious. Transformers is Michael Bay's first family friendly film with over-the-top characters and overacting by Shia LeBeouf and John Turtorro. The movie's tone did bother me at first but I realized that this movie is for kids, young and old. And that's what Bay delivers, a wild, loud but pretty sweet toy flick. Bay's visuals are impressive as always, and the visual effects are simply groundbreaking; vehicles that change into robots during a high speed chase and continue their battle crashing through buildings, you've just got to see this on the big screen! Too bad though that some of the visual effects details get lost in the already crowded frames, but the fans must have a blast to see their Transformers on the big screen, hearing Peter Cullen as Optimus Prime and getting chills down their spine with that familiar transforming-sound pumping through the speakers.
Too bad Transformers isn't a bit darker and grittier, but that doesn't have to spoil the fun, 'cause it sure is a great ride for the whole family. And the overwhelming climax simply erases the movie's flaws, that's when we get to see Bay at his best; total destruction, Bay style! Autobots, roll out for the sequel!
