The flick The Number 23 refers to the 23 Enigma, which centers on the belief that all incidents and events are directly connected to the number 23. Even the Mayans believed that the world will end on December 2012 (20 + 1 + 2=23). Writer Fernley Phillips used the 23 myth for his script, with Jim Carrey attached in a leading role. The actor-comedian also has his encounters with the number, he even named his company JC23.
Carrey plays the role of Walter Sparrow who receives a special gift from his wife Agatha (Virginia Madsen). It's a red book entitled The Number 23. Walter becomes obsessed with the novel, because the story holds similarities to his own life. The family starts a dangerous quest to unravel the mystery of the book and the number.
The veteran helmer Joel Schumacher (who previously worked with Carrey on Batman Forever) delivers a solid thriller that's being carried by the powerful performance of Jim. What I liked about the film is that the leading actors also portray the role of the characters in the book, which are the opposite of their real-life characters. Carrey is Fingerling, a tough detective, with full body tattoos, and Madsen also plays the role of the seductress Fabrizia.
The Number 23 is entertaining till the last frame, somehow the whole number mystery gets a hold of you. I also love to see Carrey in a completely different role and with The Number 23, he once again proves that he's a fine all round actor.
