The Sun is dying. Earth's last hope is the Icarus II, a spacecraft manned by scientists, astronauts and one giant bomb to reignite the Sun.
Deep into their mission, the spaceship receives a distress beacon from the Icarus I, which disappeared during the same mission several years ago. The crew jeopardizes their mission (and the existence of mankind!) when plans are changed in order to find the lost ship.
The amazing international cast of Danny Boyle's sci-fi flick Sunshine includes Chris Evans (Fantastic Four), Cliff Curtis (Once Were Warriors), Hiroyuki Sanada (The Last Samurai), Michelle Yeoh (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) and Cillian Murphy who also played a leading role in Danny Boyle's horror flick 28 Days Later.
Sunshine follows the tradition of the classic sci-fi flicks like Alien. The claustrophobic atmosphere, the awesome production design brought me right back to that 'happy place' where I grew up on these sci-fi movies. Fortunately, Boyle also keeps his eye on the development of the characters and isn't temped by using over the top action. The visual effects are subtle yet explosive, which brings a sense of realism to the whole dying sun thing. Sunshine also delivers an interesting twist, powerful score, nifty editing and Boyle's amazing visuals had a hypnotizing effect on me.
Danny Boyle's 28 Days Later didn't win me over but, thanks to the amazing cast and tight direction, Sunshine has become an intimate and at the same time spectacular sci-fi epic.
