Mark Wahlberg portrays the role of Bob Lee Swagger, a well-trained sniper who's being approached by the government to assist in preventing a possible attack on the president. Of course, things go terribly wrong and Swagger is becoming a victim of a big conspiracy. Swagger quickly hits the road in an attempt to find out who framed him.
Shooter's Antoine Fuqua previously directed the intense cop thriller Training Day, and after this little highlight of his career, some pretty mediocre flicks followed, like Tears of the Sun and King Arthur. But I've always have given Fuqua the benefit of the doubt, because I really like his visual style. Unfortunately, after seeing Shooter, that doubt has been shot to pieces. Shooter is one big cliché, been there done that type of thing. What do we have; a former soldier (with beard and ponytail) who left the ugly world and lives in the woods with his dog. A rookie FBI agent who goes against the rules and helps out Swagger. A big conspiracy planned by evil government folks, the forced plot twists to mislead the audience. And last but not least, the mysterious man in a wheelchair. All the ingredients for a typical action vehicle.
The okay shoot-out sequences and performance of Wahlberg is not enough to save Shooter. Fuqua doesn't succeed in turning the predictable story into a more than average adventure, which ends up as a dragging, unrealistic little action flick.
