The sci-fi flick Next is based on another short story written by Philip K. Dick. The late author also provided the backbone for A Scanner Darkly, Paycheck, Minority Report, Total Recall and of course the classic Blade Runner. All sci-fi flicks, which take place somewhere in the near future.
First impression of Nicolas Cage? What's up with the hairdo? Then you once again realize what a great actor this guy is. It doesn't matter what he looks like, once the story (good or bad) gets going, Cage is able to carry the picture and simply delivers. Cage convinces as a man who can see the future and not only uses it to save the world but also uses it for his own good... like gambling! What I liked about the film is that they fully make use of Johnson's powers. He can predict which pick up line will work on the girl at the restaurant. He's able to predict which route is safe to stay out of the hands of his foes and even knows how to dodge the bullets. The story's concept even gets pushed further at the movie's finale, which makes it far more interesting.
Lee Tamahori who directed one of my favorite films, the small indie drama called Once Were Warriors, once again delivers a standard but smartly made action vehicle like his previous films, Die Another Day and xXx: State of the Union. I'd still love to see him direct a smaller drama again though, instead of the explosive action flicks.
Next isn't groundbreaking but Nic Cage, the breath-taking beauty of Jessica Biel, Julianne Moore as a bad-ass agent and a very interesting concept, somehow all clicks and makes the film a pretty fun ride.
